Some say the traditional Ao Dai dress was designed during the 1700’s to distinguish the people of the Inner land and Outer Land when Vietnam was divided into two territories. Lord Nguyễn Phúc Khoát of Inner Land asked his subjects to wear a front-buttoned gown with trousers. This five-part dress (áo ngũ thân) was the inspiration for the modern áo dài.

It eventually evolved into an everyday fashion statement that flattered the feminine figure in the 1900’s. These are the dresses women usually wore that were practical when riding bikes and with the light silk material, kept the body cool enough while still offering modest coverage.

Today, we preserve wearing them for special occasions like photoshoots, weddings, parties, church, and more.

Throughout all of history, this dress has served as a statement of identity to my people. To me, fashion is like decorative language to a people. Language is the key to any culture. So to learn the history of this dress is to appreciate the language, and in turn the culture.

I bought these Ao Dai ladies as keychains during my trip back to Vietnam in 2023. Inspired by up-cycling them, I decided to turn them into necklaces.
